Tamil Cinema Icon and DMDK Chief Vijayakanth Succumbs to Illness

Popular Tamil Actor and DMDK Chief Vijayakanth breathed his last at a private hospital in Chennai. Aged 71, the Sethupathi IPS actor was on ventilator support after reportedly suffering from COVID-19. However, the official statement from the hospital mentioned that he left us due to pneumonia. He was not doing well for quite some time. He was admitted to the hospital in November but returned to public domain. PM Narendra Modi took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle and condoled the untimely death of Vijayakanth.

According to a medical bulletin issued by the hospital, Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. However, despite the best efforts of medical staff he passed away in the morning on December 28, 2023. There are reports that Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital for a regular check-up and was healthy.

Vijayakanth had a successful outing in the film industry despite the popularity of Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan during the 1980s. He has broken the shackles with his cult acting. He mainly donned the role of police officer in several films. He reportedly acted in 150+ films over the career spanning 40 years.

Vijayakanth plunged into politics in the Dravidian land comprising AIADMK and DMK. He bagged 25+ seats in the assembly in 2011 and became the opposition leader although he had an alliance with AIADMK during that time. Vijayakanth formed DMDK and served as MLA twice representing Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam.

He was popularly called Karuppu MGR and Puratchi Kalaignar. He was addressed by his fans as Captain after his hit film Captain Prabhakaran. He won Tamil Nadu Government award for best actor in 1988 for his movie – Senthoore Poove. His film Sethupathi IPS is still super hit even today. He scripted history by acting in 18 films in 1984, which is a record in Tamil film industry.

Mohanlal is in US to oversee the progress of his upcoming film Barroz. The Jailer actor watched Barroz at Sony Studios Hollywood with Mark Kilian and Jonathan Miller. The work includes fine-tuning of music and sound. Barroz is a 3D film produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas.

On the work front, Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban is running in theatres with mixed response. The film hasn’t pulled viewers to the film theatres. Even though Mohanlal is a crowd-puller, Malaikottai Vaaliban failed to impress the audience due to some reasons. We expect the film to hit the OTT platform by the end of February.

Celebrities from the film industry, including Bollywood stars and notable personalities, have begun arriving in Ayodhya for the grand consecration ceremony at the newly-constructed Ram Temple. Popular celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Randeep Hooda, and Madhuri Dixit were seen at Mumbai and Chennai airports, preparing to embark on their flights to Ayodhya. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal reportedly reached Mumbai two days back for the promotion of his film Malakottai Vaaliban and is expected to reach Ayodhya on January 22 morning.

Amitabh Bachchan, dressed in a white kurta-pajama, was spotted in a car outside Mumbai airport on Monday morning before heading to Ayodhya. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, another VIP invitee for the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, waved at photographers as he departed Mumbai for Ayodhya.

Commenting on the development, Nripendra Misra, Construction Chairman, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Ayodhya disclosed that the temple has been made to last for thousand years. Moreover, top scientists including ISRO engineers have contributed to the construction of the temple. An interesting fact to note is that no Iron or Steel has been used in the temple. The trust has used the best quality granite, sandstone, and marble without cement or lime mortar. The joints are secured by a lock and key mechanism using groves and ridges.

Telugu actors Ram Charan and Chiranjeevi, adorned in traditional attire, boarded a private plane in Hyderabad for Ayodhya. Surrounded by security personnel, the duo waved at fans on the tarmac before boarding the plane with their families.

South superstars Rajinikanth and Dhanush flew to Ayodhya a day before the grand opening of the Ram Temple. Swarmed by fans at Chennai airport, the actors made their way to catch their flight.

Recently married Randeep Hooda and Lin Laishram greeted the media outside the airport before departing for Ayodhya. Joining in on “Jai Shri Ram” chants with the paparazzi, Hooda expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s a big day for India.”

Actor Anupam Kher, known for his role in “Kashmir Files,” also traveled to Ayodhya on Sunday. Sharing a video from inside the flight, Kher expressed the atmosphere of great devotion among the Ram devotees on board.

Well-known Bollywood couples, including Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif, and Madhuri Dixit with husband Shriram Nene, were seen outside Mumbai airport in traditional attire before flying to Ayodhya. The couples greeted the paparazzi with folded hands.

“Queen” actor Kangana Ranaut arrived in Ayodhya on Sunday, participating in a cleanliness drive at an Ayodhya temple. Dressed in a red and gold silk saree, she was actively involved in sweeping the floors at the Hanuman Garhi Temple. Speaking to news agency ANI, she expressed her joy at being in Ayodhya during this festive time.

Released on December 21, the Malayalam courtroom drama, helmed by Jeethu Joseph, successfully entered the coveted 100-crore club on its 35th day. According to reports, the film made an estimated opening of Rs 6 crore in December, with Rs 2.80 crore contributed by fans in India, particularly from Kerala.
