Kaappaan Movie Reviews: Blockbluster or Flop

Published

on

Kaappaan

Kaappaan is the latest film directed by popular Tamil director KV Anand. In addition to the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, the Kaappaan features Suriya, Arya, Sayyeshaa among others. The film has also been released in Telugu under the name Bandobast. Kaappaan was released on September 20, 2019, with great expectations. Like in the case of the other Suriya movies, the Kaappaan also includes action scenes and thrilling encounters. Let’s see what the media has to say about Kaappaan.

A colossal misfire for Suriya. KV Anand’s latest collaboration with his favourite leading man is a painstakingly long thriller, that neither has soul nor brain — The Hindu

Despite Stellar Star Cast, Suriya-Mohanlal Starrer Loses Focus. We wonder what is the plot about. The tyranny of big business houses, a prime minister who is checkmated on his path to creating a prosperous India (and mind you, this includes Kashmir!) or the importance of organic farming. It gets so foggy! — News18

Suriya, Mohanlal are charismatic in this formulaic action drama. Why did a fine actor like Boman Irani agree to play such a clichéd villain role? Mohanlal in his limited role is made to mouth lengthy patriotic dialogues which sound hollow. Suriya tries his best to salvage the film but weak writing and bad script once again lets him down. — Firstpost

Kaappaan Australia

Ambitious but exhausting. Usually Anand’s films stand out in the technical department but here everything is strictly average including music, cinematography, writing and editing. We also get a vibe of watching an old Vijayakanth film with an extra dose of organic farming and bio war angle thrown in. On the whole, it is easily the weakest film of KV Anand. It’s a disappointment, no question about it from a team capable of so much more. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. — Sify

There’s a germ of an idea in Kaappaan that had potential – bio war. But the director buries it beneath layers of flab in a desperate attempt to make the film entertaining. — NewsMinute

Kaappaan UK

A nightmarish film that no star can save. Another problem with Kaappaan is it totally lacks dramatic tension. After a point, it is numbing to prepare for yet another situation orchestrated for the director’s convenience. The film’s narrative is insincere and defies logic. — IndianExpress

An overlong film full of bloat and devoid of soul. Kaappaan hardly shows evidence of any interest or awareness to warrant its declaration on the matter to be taken seriously. It supports the sacrificing of an individual or two if a group were to benefit, but walking out among sullen faces, it felt like the inverse had happened. — Cinemaexpress

Inconsistent writing makes for an average watch. Overall, Kaappaan plays a big game and is very commercial in nature. Go for it to watch Suriya on screen. — Asianage

Suriya tries hard to keep this action film afloat. The film boasts of acting talents like Mohanlal, Samuthirakani and Boman Irani, but unfortunately none of them make an impact with their performance. Mohanlal as the PM is a major miscast and he bores with his speeches of patriotism. —

Pinkvilla

too much! take guard. Kaappaan is an unruly mix of political developments. When too many factors are at play, it is only natural that plots and subplots go berserk. There are songs, dance and item numbers to cover up these jarring sequences, but then so be it. — Manoramaonline

Messy Narrative Kills Thrilling Plot. On the whole, Bandobast never comes together as a narrative. It has a predictable plot that is marred heavily by muddled narration. Too many ideas and weak writing kill any little fun that could be had. In short, Bandobast is one the weakest outings of KV Anand, if not the weakest. — mirchi9

Good objective review, Anand! To add, I’ve never found Boman Irani convincing in an all-out black villian’s role except for 3 idiots. He was bad in Don.
