Mammootty

A film starring Mammootty as a young man in his 30s may not be groundbreaking in Mollywood, but what sets an upcoming Malayalam movie apart is the exclusive use of artificial intelligence (AI) to portray the character. In a departure from traditional methods, the film requires only four shots of Mammootty, with the actor’s youthful avatar being entirely generated through AI, eliminating the need for his physical presence on set.

Unnikrishnan B, film producer and general secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), revealed that Mammootty has given his approval for the use of AI-generated versions of himself in the project. The actor acknowledged the significant role technology will play in the future of filmmaking, paving the way for this innovative approach.

The details of the movie, such as the cast, producer, director, budget, and release date, remain undisclosed. However, the use of AI to replicate Mammootty’s character for a brief appearance of three to four minutes is noteworthy, especially when Hollywood is still deliberating over the ethical implications of cloning actors in films.

In Hollywood, obtaining performers’ consent for creating digital replicas has become mandatory, even posthumously requiring approval from authorized representatives or unions. Unnikrishnan emphasized that the film industry is experiencing both positive and negative impacts from AI, influencing creative processes.

Industry experts acknowledge that technological advancements can streamline work processes and save time in the long run. However, caution is advised regarding the ethical considerations of AI. Dr. Jain Joseph, founder and chairman of Neo School of Films, Kochi, stressed the need for careful development of technology and well-trained technicians when employing AI on a larger scale. In the case of the upcoming Malayalam project, AI is utilized for a few shots depicting a flashback set around 30 years ago, highlighting the potential for further exploration of technology in the film industry as it advances.
