Upcoming Malayalam Films

After a lull, Malayalam films are again getting attention from viewers. It’s been a dull year for Mohanlal with only Alone releasing in January 2023. However, the film failed to get any attention at the box office. Let’s examine the latest and upcoming Malayalam films.

Garudan

Gaurdan is the first film of Arun Varma and has been tagged as a crime drama thriller. The story has been penned by Midhun Manuel Thomas with Listin Stephen serving as producer. Suresh Gopi and Biju Menon play lead roles in the film. It’s a comeback film for Suresh Gopi after Pappan in 2022. The film also includes Thalaivasal Vijay, Jagadish, Siddique, Dileesh Pothan, Abhirami, Divya Pillai, Nishanth Sagar, Major Ravi, Jayan Cherthala and Arjun Nandhakumar. The film was completed in quick span of time. Jakes bejoy serves as the music director. Garudan was released in theatres on November 3, 2023, amidst Keraleeyam. The film received positive response from viewers with kids and women turning up in large numbers. According to analytics, Garudan minted Rs 1.5 cr on the first day and is expected to increase over the coming days.

Kaathal – The Core

Kaathal – The Core is an Upcoming Malayalam Film featuring Mammootty and Jyothika in lead roles. The film will be released on November 23 after a huge delay. Directed by Jeo Baby, the story has been written by Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria. The film is produced by Mammootty Kampany, which is the venture of Mammootty.

Barroz

Barroz is the Upcoming Malayalam first directorial venture of Mohanlal. While Mohanlal plays the lead role, the film also features Guru Somasundaram, Maya, Sara Vega, Tuhin Menon, Cesar Lorente Raton, Kallirroi Tziafeta in supporting roles. You can see that there are no known faces from the Malayalam film industry except Mohanlal. The film is based on Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure novel. The shooting happened in Kochi, Goa, Bangkok, and Chennai respectively. The film will release in 3D mode on March 28, 2024, globally as announced by Mohanlal on his official social media handles.

Malaikottai Vaaliban

Malaikottai Vaaliban is the much-awaited Upcoming Malayalam Film featuring Mohanlal in the lead role. The film has been directed by the famous filmmaker Liji Jose Pellissery. The film is the maiden production of John & Mark Creative in association with Century Films, Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments, Yoodlee Films, and Amen Movie Monastery. While the film is based on the story by PS Rafeeque, the music has been composed by Prashant Pillai. The film is due for release on January 25, 2024, on the eve of Republic Day.

JSK

JSK, which is the short name for Janaki vs The State of Kerala features Suresh Gopi as the lead. The film includes a huge cast that includes Divya Pillai, Anupama Parameswaran, Shruti Ramachandran, Kottayam Ramesh, Baiju, Askar Ali, Shobhi Thilakan, Favour Francis, Ratheesh Krishnan, and Madhav Suresh. JSK shooting was recently wrapped but the release date is not yet available. We expect the film to hit by the end of January 2024.

Malaikottai Vaaliban was released on January 25, 2024, amidst huge expectations. Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, Malaikottai Vaaliban has entered its third week without much celebration among fans. According to reports, the Malaikottai Vaaliban OTT is expected to hit Disney+ Hotstar by the first week of March.

The company has acquired streaming rights for the film. Even though the films are released on OTT platforms after fourth week, there are indications that Malaikottai Vaaliban OTT will have an early release. There is a possibility that the film could hit OTT by the end of February 2024.

In addition to Mohanlal, Malaikottai Vaaliban features Sonali Kulkarni, Danish Sait, Manoj Moses, Katha Nandi, Manikandan R. Achari, and much more. The story revolves around the journey to various places and conducts battles with wrestlers. The movie comprises brilliant visual effects but the story was not as per the expectations of the people.

The film failed to make any major impact at the box office. The trackers have reported that Malaikottai Vaaliban has minted Rs 26 crore worldwide, which is less than the overall investment. Mohanlal had announced the release of a comic book. We don’t know in which marketplace the book will be up for sale.

On the work front, Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban is running in theatres with mixed response. The film hasn’t pulled viewers to the film theatres. Even though Mohanlal is a crowd-puller, Malaikottai Vaaliban failed to impress the audience due to some reasons. We expect the film to hit the OTT platform by the end of February.
