US suspends all Chinese Airlines flights amidst COVID-19 pandemic

Published

Chinese Airlines

The United States hs ordered the immediate suspension of all the flights by Chinese Airlines to and fro from the country with effect from June 16. The development comes in the wake after Beijing failed to allow American carriers to resume services to China.

According to the US Transportation Department (DoT), the US carriers have been asked to resume passenger services starting June 1. However, the Chinese Government has failed to approve their requests, which is a clear violation of the Air Transport Agreement.

Even though the Chinese Airlines suspension order takes effect from June 16, the order will come into force immediately if President Trump signs it. It is unlikely that Trump will sign the petition soon because people would have booked flight tickets. Their journey will be in jeopardy if the US decided to cancel flights all at once.

The US carriers have either reduced or suspended services to China due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, United and Delta Airlines had submitted the required applications at the start of My to resume operations. The airlines failed to get clearance and authorization from Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC).

With the suspension of the Chinese Airlines flights by the US to China, the tensions between the two countries after the eruption of the COVID-19 will increase double-fold. It’s better for the US to suspend flights from China because it will reduce the risk of COVID-19 community spread. We hope the casualty rates will decrease in the US by the middle of June. The US and Chinese airspace were busy before the COVID-19 pandemic with carriers operating over 325 flights per week.
