Thrissur Pooram: A Spectacular Festival of Lights, Drums, and Colors

Thrissur Pooram is one of the most famous and vibrant festivals of Kerala, celebrated annually in the month of Medam (April-May) in the city of Thrissur. It is a grand cultural extravaganza, where thousands of devotees from different parts of India and abroad gather to witness the magnificent display of lights, drums, and colors.
History and Significance
The history of Thrissur Pooram dates back to the late 18th century, when Raja Rama Varma, also known as Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin, organized the festival as a competition between two temples – Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi. The first Thrissur Pooram was held in the year 1798. The festival aimed to promote harmony and unity among the different communities and religious groups of the region. Over the years, Thrissur Pooram has evolved into a cultural festival that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
The Festival
The festival begins with the hoisting of the flag at the Paramekkavu Devi Temple, followed by the Thiruvambadi temple. The main highlight of the festival is the spectacular procession of 30 caparisoned elephants, which starts from the Thiruvambadi temple and ends at the Vadakkumnathan temple. The elephants are adorned with colorful umbrellas, silk fabrics, and jewelry, and carry traditional musical instruments such as thimila, maddalam, and edakka.
The festival also features a dazzling display of fireworks, which light up the night sky with vibrant colors and patterns. The fireworks competition between the two temples is one of the most anticipated events of the festival.
Another important feature of Thrissur Pooram is the percussion performance by hundreds of artists, who play various traditional instruments such as chenda, thimila, maddalam, and ilathalam. The rhythmic beats of the percussion instruments create a mesmerizing atmosphere, and the synchronized performance of the artists is a sight to behold.
The festival concludes with the display of the golden elephant, also known as the Ezhunnallathu, which is a procession of the deity of Vadakkumnathan temple carried on the back of an elephant. The golden elephant is decorated with gold-plated ornaments and is accompanied by hundreds of artists playing traditional instruments.
Conclusion
Thrissur Pooram is a festival that celebrates the cultural diversity and heritage of Kerala. It is a perfect blend of music, dance, and colors, and attracts thousands of tourists every year. The festival is not only a celebration of religion but also a symbol of unity and harmony among the people of different communities. The next time you visit Kerala, don’t miss the opportunity to witness this grand cultural extravaganza.

Alencier’s Remarks on Kerala State Film Award Statuette Spark Gender Row

At the 53rd Kerala State Film Awards ceremony, actor Alencier Le Lopez received the Special Jury Award for his performance in the film Appan. In his acceptance speech made before Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, he made a number of controversial remarks about the award statuette, which is a stylized figure of a woman.
Alencier said that he was insulted by the statuette and that he expected an award statuette with a male figure. He also said that the female figure was “luring” him and that he was planning to head home after taking the award because the statuette was too heavy.
Alencier also criticized the prize money for the Special Jury Award, which is Rs. 25,000. He said that it was an insult to give him such a small amount of money, and that he deserved more. He also said that he was requesting Gautam Ghosh, the head of the jury, to look into the matter.
Alencier’s remarks have been met with widespread criticism. Many people have accused him of sexism and misogyny. Some have also said that his remarks were disrespectful to the women who have won the award in the past.
Speaking to media on Friday, Alencier refused to apologize for his remarks and said he had said nothing wrong. He also slammed Indira Gandhi for imposing Emergency. Alencier’s remarks are in line with a long history of sexism and misogyny in the Malayalam film industry. The Kerala State Film Awards have been criticized in the past for their lack of gender parity. Alencier’s remarks are a reminder of the need for greater awareness of gender issues in the Malayalam film industry.
